(1980 – 1980)

Meaning Bandname: Already in 1978 – 1979 Olav and Paul used this fictive bandname for graffiti use only. We were obviously fans of the Sex Pistols so we thought The Sextons was a good name for a fictional punkband. One of the meanings of Sexton is gravedigger which we thought was fucking cool.

Bio: Back in 1979 Jos and his friend Alex were the only punx in their small village called Achterveld. They often went to Amersfoort to visit recordstores where the city was covered with punk graffiti (A’foort City Punx, Punx 79 etc. which were graffiti tags of Paul and Olav) although they never saw any punx on the streets. Pretty much the first connection happened when Jos and Alex replied to one of those graffiti tags with “Achterveld Punx are greeting Amersfoort punx”. In early 1980 Jos met Paul in a snackbar close to Paul’s school, where Paul greeted him with the famous sentence: “Are you one of those Achterveld punx?”. That was the accidental start of our lifelong friendship. Not long after that we we wanted to start a punkband, although nobody of us could really play an instrument. That band was The Sextons. Our first practise was in Alex’s bedroom. Guitar, bass and vocals were all plugged in a bass amplifier (Alex had a rich uncle who gave him a bassguitar and this bassamp) and a chair and washpowder boxes were used as drums. That first rehearsal of out of tune noisy punk was recorded on a small tape deck. 3 of the songs were covers like “Menten” from The Vopo’s and “Do You Wanna Dance?” and “It’s a long way back to Germany” from The Ramones. One of our own songs was called “Victim”. Some of these Sextons songs later appeared as bonustracks on the Lärm discography release by Coalition/Farewell Records. Later The Sextons recorded a second demo of 20-25 songs sadly enough that tape got lost. The band did just one concert as the local support act of the Bizon Kidz from Utrecht. Alex got heavily involved in the local drugscene and this was the end of the band. Paul, Olav and Jos would continue with Disturbers.
