(Volendam/Amsterdam/Edam, 1982-1985)

Meaning Bandname: Normally written as gepeupel and is Dutch for mob, riffraff, the plebs.

Bio: The band started as a one-man-project of Niels de Wit under the name De Mannetjes in April 1982. He changed the name in Gepøpel in September 1982. He released 30 copies of the first 12 song tape in March 1983. In August 1983 he released the “Mooi Volendam” tape with 8 songs. In September 1983 the band becomes a 4-piece and record 5 songs for the “Bijna 2000 Jaar Geleden” compilation tape in the rehearsalroom. In 1984 they started to do concerts. Niels wrote the lyrics and also started a label, releases bands, make cartoons and travel around the country to record bands with his mobile studio (called A.A.R.S. [Anti-Aesthetic Record Syndicate]). They recorded in March 1985 in Joke’s Koeienverhuurbedrijf for a 7” EP. Broke up after the Spanish tour with Funeral Oration.
