(Amsterdam/Alkmaar, 2000-2005)

Meaning Bandname: Billi brought it up because he liked this song by Olho Seco, and since guitarist Cleverson is from Brazil, he didn’t expect him to reject the name.

Bio: Back in early 2000, Billi was on the phone with drummer Poda from former Yugoslavia, arranging a gig for Cripple Bastards and Betercore at a recently squatted butcher shop on the Overtoom in Amsterdam. Poda mentioned that later that week, he was going to have a “jam” session with a mutual friend of ours from Poland, the bassist Kfadrat, along with Cleverson, a guitarist who had just arrived in Amsterdam from Brazil and whom Poda had met at a concert. It sounded so interesting that I immediately volunteered to be the singer.

The songs were written by all members (with most of the musical work credited to Cleverson), and the lyrics were written by Billi.

Rehearsals started out in a (briefly) squatted butcher shop on the Overtoom in Amsterdam, then moved on to a (briefly) squatted (techno) space on Cornelis Dirkszstraat, also in Amsterdam. And, after a stint in a shipping container (with intense reverberation) at the ADM site, we finally ended up in “our own” rehearsal space within the Friekens squat in Amsterdam-Noord. We were able to leave our gear there because Dejan and Kfadrat were living in the building at the time.

The band played nothing but original songs, and the only cover we played was “Olho de Gato” by Olho Seco.

We had been together for a few weeks and had a few songs finished when, as luck would have it, a friend of ours applied for a job at Joke’s Koeienverhuurbedrijf studio. They needed a band to come in and record a track. We ended up recording all five songs we had at the time, which were then released on a split EP with Betercore.

We called it quits in 2005, by which time the band was already running out of steam. Poda and our final bassist, Mike Offender from the US, were recruited by Dave Dictor to play with MDC for an upcoming tour. Cleverson and I went on to form the band Sangre. Funnily enough, during one of our early rehearsals with Sangre, I heard another band practicing nearby and thought, “Huh? A band covering ‘Dead Cops’?” It turned out to be the actual MDC, the very band that had just effectively halved our old lineup, bringing it to an end. Luckily, it was MDC, and you can’t help but be happy for them.
