Review:
Rotterdam is a city where alot have happened so I was looking forward to this. It’s a vehicle for photographer Carla van der Marel so we obviously get her take on things and ofcourse the bigger part of the book is her pictures. The couple of pages with text come from Mark Ritsema who played in Spasmodique which were quite popular in The Netherlands at the time. There’s some good pre-1983 punk stories concerning Vissenpunk, Debiele Eenheid and the Jazzbunker venue. It’s dual language: above every page in Dutch and below in English. Overall we get a interesting but rather short history lesson because before you know it we’re at the photo section. I count 12 photo’s of punk bands (where’s Bunker OESO?!?) and there’s alot of mainstream bands (Ramones, Babes In Toyland, Legendary Stardust Cowboy, etc.) plus portraits. The final 4 pages have some very nice posters that Carla made for De Vlerk and Nighttown venues. And with the book comes a CD with Vissenpunk, Debiele Eenheid, Budrot, Anarcrust, No-Men, and 18 others (all previously released except Vissenpunk which is a rehearsal song). There’s also a website.
