Diminished Resonsibility: My Life As A U.K. Sub, and other strange stories Volume 1 book
Alvin Gibbs - Diminished Responsibility: My Life As A U.K. Sub, and other strange stories Volume 1 book
European punk in the 70’s mostly came from pubrock and musicians in bands were often schooled or experienced. Many 70’s punkbands don’t differ much from an average rockband. Most “bigger” punkbands work with managers, riders, agencies, hotels, etc. This is about the musical career of Alvin Gibbs who worked as a bassplayed in bands such as U.K. Subs, Hanoi Rocks, Iggy Pop, Urban Dogs, Cheap And Nasty. This book is mostly about his time in the U.K. Subs and begins in 1973. The second book focuses on the 11 years after he stopped with the Subs in 1983 (although he will join again later on). It’s very well written and has great stories about his earlier bands, Guy Stevens, and touring with Thin Lizzy and The Police. On page 97 his life with the U.K. Subs begins. It starts with the making of the Diminished Responsibility LP, and continues with stories about the 32 concerts tour through the USA with Anti Nowhere League in 1982 and the Shake Up The World USA tour in December 1982 plus the making of (my favorite Subs record) Endangered Species LP and the Polish tour in February 1983. There’s plenty backstage stories, groupies and money involved. It’s a really good rockstar biography and very recommended if you want to know more about the U.K. Subs 1980-1983.
Thank you. I think the book turned out to be very interesting. I have just started reading and so far I am satisfied with the way the material is presented ? ...
Alvin Gibbs, when they played with Cheap 'n' Nasty (Dutch punk band, not to be confused with Alvin's later Cheap And Nasty), in Eindhoven in 1981 insisted on buying the first copy of our Covergirl EP. Terry sent it by mail to him in England when it was ready.
Recently there came an Alvin Gibbs EP. Review here. He plans to be on a UK Subs European tour, end of 2021-early 2022.
